Begin your color tour on
M-50 with the first stop at Hidden Lake
Gardens. Hidden Lake Gardens is 8 miles west
of tecumseh and just 8 miles east of
Brooklyn, Michigan. Hidden Lake Gardens,
owned and operated by michigan State
University, is a 755 acre botanical garden
within a 6 mile one-way scenic drive. The
gardens include visitors gallery with gift
shop and a plant conservatory and restrooms.
Attached to the plant conservatory are the
huge arid and tropical domes. There is a
$3.00 admission fee.
Exiting Hidden Lake
Gardens to the west, turn north on Pentecost
Highway and follow the winding road by Sand
Lake and ending at Hwy. US-12 (Michigan
Ave). Turn left on US-12 and drive a half
mile to Mystery Hills (at the blinker) and
turn right (north) on Wamplers Lake Highway,
also known as M-124 or the shortest 8 mile
highway in Michigan. You have entered Irish
Hills' Walter J. Hayes State Park. (Watch
for deer and other critters crossing the
road). Entrance to the camping area is on
the east side (on Round Lake) and entrance
to the beach and boat launch (at Wamplers
Lake) is on the west side.
Continuing on the drive
on M-124, the scenic drive goes right next
to Wamplers Lake and continues on to Pink
Street. Take a left at Pink Street and you
will pass the Irish Hills Girl Scout Camp
(on Wamplers Lake). Continue south on
Pink/Person Highway and drive so close to
Stoney Lake you can dip your toe in it, or
perhaps a fishing pole. Coming down the hill
on Person Highway at the stop on Lake,
Cambridge Lake and Killarney Lake just
across the highway. You may travel by these
lakes (and through the hills) by taking
Killarney Hwy., Springville Hwy. and Onsted
Hwy to M-50 and back to US-12. Also Egan
hwy, off US-12, will take you to the south
side of Wamplers Lake and Jerry's Pub &
Restaurant (with clean restrooms) and a
variety of food and drink.
